Current Research Projects
NUBRI Research and Projects
The research projects at NUBRI aim to reduce the health burden caused by a wide range of pathogens in Sudan. They include the identification and investigation of genetic polymorphisms—such as single nucleotide polymorphisms, indels, genomic duplications, and genomic rearrangements—that may contribute to phenotypic traits like increased virulence or drug resistance.
These projects engage researchers and students in various activities, including training in advanced analyses and the use of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) approaches. The work benefits the department and the institute while also opening opportunities for regional and international collaborations.
Ongoing Projects:
Development of Linux System for Bioinformatics Analysis Project
Linux is the main operating system for heavy-duty computation due to its reliability and security. It is widely used in supercomputers, internet servers, and embedded devices. This project focuses on extending the capabilities of existing bioinformatics-focused Linux distributions, making them more user-friendly and comprehensive for both novice and expert users.
Genomic Characterization of the SARS-CoV-2 Isolated from Sudan
This project aims to characterize the full genome sequence of SARS-CoV-2 strains from COVID-19 patients in Sudan. Whole-genome sequencing will provide high-resolution data on the virus's genetic makeup, informing public health strategies and aiding in the design of therapeutic interventions.
Seroprevalence and Molecular Characterization of Hepatitis B Virus and Hepatitis Delta Virus Co-Infection
This study focuses on patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and liver cirrhosis in Khartoum State. It aims to determine the prevalence of HDV, identify common genotypes of HBV and HDV, and detect HDV RNA using real-time PCR.
